Homemade Cough Syrup: Must For Monsoon

As climate is changing, I can see lot of my friends,relative having dry cough, cold etc. Many of us try home remedies and others go to doctors and have antibiotics. I am not against antibiotics, however I prefer home remedies along with antibiotics. These remedies increase our immune power and helps us to combat infections in much better way. Once of such remedies is this cough syrup.

This is not like normal cough syrups we get at drugstore. This syrup should be consumed when it is hot. You can have 2-3 tablespoons if you want and then store in refrigerator for 2-3 days.

This homemade syrup contains ginger which is good for cough. The medicinal components of ginger are its essential oils, antioxidants and oleoresin. Oleoresin, in fact, is known for is antitussive abilities, meaning that it can relieve and suppress coughing.

Recipe:

  1. 1 inch piece of ginger (grated)
  2. 1/2 teaspoon black paper powder
  3. 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  4. 1 teaspoon jaggery (optional)
  5. salt as per taste
  6. 2 cups of water

Mix all the ingredients together in a container and boil it till water content reduces to half.

Turn of the burner. You can have 2-3 tablespoons of it immediately or you can store it and have it as required.

Note: Do not store this liquid for more than 2 days.. It will lose its effect. And make sure you heat it before having it.

Crispy Oats Rava Dosa

Health is Wealth. So its very important for all of us to stay fit and eat healthy food. TodayI am going to share how to make crispy Dosa containing Oats. Oats are very healthy and are high in fiber. I used to purchase instant oats idli and dosa packs from market. But this time I thought I should do it differently so, I was looking for some oats recipe and I came across this blog Padhus Kitchen. It has lots of nice healthy recipes, one of which was ‘Oats Dosa’. Trust me it is really tasty and very easy to make.

This recipe contained plain oats, I thought of adding some twist to recipe and I added Masala Oats instead of plain oats.

Before looking into recipe lets see benefits of oats:

  1. It provides high levels of fiber
  2. It is low in calorie and  stops cravings
  3. Reduce risk of cardiovascular disease
  4. Enhance immune response to infection
  5. Stabilize blood sugar
  6. Lower type 2 diabetis risk

 

Recipe:

  1. 1 cup masala oats (of your choice)
  2. 2 tablespoon rice flour
  3. 2 tablespoon rava/sooji (Semolina)
  4. 1 teaspoon green chili paste
  5. 1 tablespoon coriander leaves
  6. 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  7. 1/2 cup curd
  8. 1 cup water
  9. salt as required
  10. oil to make dosas

Grind oats and mix all ingredients. Keeps for 15-20 mins.

Spread some oil on non stick pan (its ok if you dont have non stick pan, you can use normal one.). Heat pan properly and add 1 big spoon of batter and spread little. Let is cook properly, then turn the dosa other side, again heat for some time and remove from pan.

Serve hot with chatni or sauce of your choice.

Tips:

  1. Make sure dosa is cooked properly from one side before turning it
  2. Heat dosa on low flame to make it crispy.

Homemade Lemon Sugar Scrub

Last weekend I decided to take a break from my daily scheduled and went out with my family to one of the water park in Mumbai. The entire day was awesome, but the only problem we faced was HOT climate. As we visited the water park in summers, all my family members had suffered from bad TANNING and ITCHING problems including me. So to get rid of this problem I thought of making a body scrub to remove dead skin and tanning.

As name says it has lemon juice in it, which helps to reduce tan and brightens skin.

Benefits of Ingredients:

  1. Lemon juice:
    1. Exfoliant:lemon juice is rich in alpha hydroxy acids that help exfoliate the skin and get rid of dead skin cells. Removing dead skin cells allows the pores to breathe, promotes new skin growth and helps maintain skin’s elasticity.
    2. Skin Brightener: Lemon juice can brighten and lighten the skin naturally.
    3. Fight wrinkles: Lemon juice used in combination with honey helps to reduce wrinkles.

    1. Keeps skin glowing

Recipe:

  1. 5 tablespoons sugar
  2. 2 tablespoons salt
  3. 1.5 tablespoons honey
  4. 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  5. 1 tablespoons olive oil

Grind sugar and salt.

Add lemon juice and honey and mix well

Add olive oil and mix well

Your scrub is ready to use. 🙂

Note: If you want to use it later, store it in refrigerator.

Healthy AND Tasty Spinach Rolls (Spinach Khandvi)

These rolls are tasty and healthy tea time snack. This has goodness of spinach, curd (yogurt) and chickpeas flour and it does not contain oil.

Benefits of Ingredients:

  1. Spinach:
    1. It’s low in calories yet very high in vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients.
    2. Excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, magnesium, folate, manganese, iron, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin B2, potassium, and vitamin B6.
    3. Spinach is loaded with flavonoids which act as antioxidants, protecting the body from free radicals.
    4. Recommended to those with high blood pressure
    5. The high amount of vitamin A in spinach also promotes healthy skin by allowing for proper moisture retention in the epidermis, thus fighting psoriasis, keratinization, acne and even wrinkles.

  1. Chickpeas flour:
    1. It is Gluten Free
    2. One-half cup of besan flour has 201 micrograms of folate, compared to 26 micrograms in whole-wheat flour and 182 micrograms in enriched white flour.
    3. Good source of thiamin and vitamin B-6.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  1. 1 cup chickpea flour
  2. 1 cup curd/ yogurt
  3. ½ cup chopped spinach leaves
  4. 1 ½ cups of drinking water
  5. ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  6. salt as per taste
  7. pinch of asafoetida powder

For garnishing:

  1. 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  2. 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  3. 1 tablespoon grated coconut
  4. chopped coriander leaves

 

Grind spinach leaves in grinder. Then add all other ingredients (except garnishing ingredients).

Mix well. Make sure there are no lumps.

Add this mixture to pan and heat it. Keep stirring continuously to avoid lump formation.

After some time this mixture will start leaving sides of vessel. This means our mixture is cooked properly. Now remove it from heat and pour it on flat plate, and spread to a thin sheet using spatula.

Let it cool. Cut the sheet into 2-3 inches strips using knife. Now roll each sheet into rolls.

Place these rolls in a dish.

Now for garnishing:

Heat oil in a wok and add sesame seeds, let them crack. Then add asafoetida powder and pour this tampering on rolls. Garnish with coriander leaves and grated coconut.

Your tasty spinach rolls are ready to eat.. 😉

To make a good body cream, it is generally suggested to use Shea butter or cocoa butter.But unfortunately to get Shea butter or cocoa butter in India (specially Mumbai) is very difficult.

So the best alternative i found was Kokum butter.The best part of Kokum butter is, it is easy to find in any place in India and is cheap too. And the results of this cream is amazing 🙂

The only problem with Kokum butter is that it is harder and very oily, So should be used in appropriate proportion.

Benefits of Main Ingredients used:

  1. Kokum butter:
    1. Prevents dry skin and wrinkles
    2. Helps regenerate skin cells
    3. High oxidative stability Use kokum butter is soaps, balms, belly balms, foot care products and other emollient skin treatments.
    4. Quick absorption rate
    5. Excellent for sensitive skin
  1. Aloe vera gel:
    1. Minimize damaged tissues
    2. Relieve skin rashes
    3. Reduce annoying pimples

Recipe:

  1. 1 tablespoon beeswax
  2. 2 tablespoon Kokum butter
  3. 2 tablespoon olive oil
  4. 2 tablespoon coconut oil
  5. 4-5 tablespoon aloe vera gel
  6. ½ cup distilled water
  7. 3 capsules of vitamin E
  8. 1 tablespoon corn flour (for better texture of cream)

Heat all oils and beeswax by double boiler method till beeswax and kokum butter are dissolved completely. Remove from boiler, add vitamin E, aloe vera gel and blend with blender. Then add distilled water and corn flour and blend again. Blend till you get desired texture of cream.

Note: If you want to make it more liquefied, then add more water or gel.

I was just looking for some homemade scrub recipe and I came across this simple and effective solution, homemade coffee sugar scrub (this one is my favourite scrub recipe).

This does not contain any harmful chemicals or preservatives.

All the ingredients are easily available have so many benefits for healthy skin.. This scrub is just awesome, it makes your skin smooth and supple.

Ingredients Benefits:

This scrub can be made by 5 simple ingredients, of which few are optional.

  1. Coffee:
    1. Fights Free Radicals: Pollution damages our skin and free radicals causes premature skin ageing. The antioxidants contained in caffeine can attack these free radicals and eliminate them. This will improve the overall look of your skin.
    2. Reduces Cellulite:Caffeine can dehydrate fatty cells. This results in the water disappearing from the surface of your skin. This minimizes the appearance of cellulite, thus providing you with a smoother skin.
    3. Tightens Skin: Another added benefit of caffeine is that its topical use can tighten fine lines and smooth puffy skin.

Recipe:

  1. 2 tablespoon coffee powder (don’t use one you get with chicory, use pure coffee)
  2. 2 tablespoon sugar
  3. 2 tablespoon olive oil
  4. 2 tablespoon coconut oil
  5. 1 tablespoon honey (optional)

 

Note: Instead of 2 different oils you can use only one oil.

grind coffee and sugar together, put this mixture in bowl and add oils and honey. Mix well.

Your scrub is ready to use. You can store this scrub in a dry container for later use.
