Healthy Pav Bhaji

Who says street food can not be healthy.. All Mumbaikars or I should say Indians loves pav bhaji. Specially people staying in Mumbai must have had pav bhaji from Juhu beach.. Its yummm!!!

However it is very unhealthy and unhygienic. It contains lot of potato and butter and oil.

While searching for healthy recipes  I came across this link, which has recipe for healthy pav bhaji. As my husband loves pav bhaji from street, I thought to give this healthy recipe a try. And it turned out great.. It was yummy..

So the secret is using soy chunks instead of potato and beetroot to color the gravy. No butter and very less amount of oil.

Lets see the recipe.

  • 1 cup soya chunks
  • 3-4 dried red chillies
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 medium potato
  • 1.5 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 150 grams cauliflower florets
  • 300 ml tomato puree
  • 1 medium beetroot
  • 1/2 finely chopped cauliflower
  • 1 medium beetroot
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tspoons pav-bhaji masala
  • 1 large onion finely chopped
  • chopped coriander to garnish
  • Finely chopped onions, lemon wedges, pav or whole wheat bread to serve

Main Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • In a bowl, place the dried red chillies and garlic-cover with ½ cup hot water and keep aside for 15 minutes. Once the chillies have rehydrated, grind them with the garlic to a fine paste, using some water. Keep aside.
  • Bring 4 cups water to boil with 1 tsp salt and the soy chunks. When the water is boiling, lower the flame and simmer for 5-7 minutes, until the soya chunks are cooked.
  • Drain the water using a sieve, and press out all the extra water from the chunks using the back of a cup. Grind coarsely (use the pulse function so that you don’t make it into a fine paste) and keep aside.
  • Peel and roughly chop the beet, potatoes. Wash and clean the cauliflower florets. Place them all together in a small pressure cooker with ½ tsp salt, 1 cup water and pressure cook for 10 minutes. Open when cool enough and mash with a potato masher until you get a coarse puree. Keep aside.
  • In a large pan, heat the oil. Add the finely chopped onion and capsicum and sauté on medium flame for 7-8 mins until the onion are soft. Add the chilli-garlic paste, pav bhaji masala and sauté for 3-4 mins on low flame. Add the coarsely ground soya chunks, sauté until the seasonings are absorbed by this. Then add the mashed cooked vegetables, tomato puree, salt and bring to a simmer.
  • If you want more spicy bhaji then you can add little more masala or red chilli powder
  • Garnish with fresh coriander. Serve hot.

You can also use this as filling for dosa or roll.

There are 3 steps to get radiant skin, they are cleaning, toning and moisturizing..

So the first and most important step to get beautiful and radiant skin in cleaning. We normally wash our face with face wash or cleansers that we get in stores. Beetroot Strawberry Lip Balm

Its going to be girls night-out tonight.. We all are  meeting after very long time.. Its going to be fun. However I was thinking what should I gift  them.. Well there are few things which I have bought, but I wanted to give something made by me. Then I thought of some colored lip balm.. Then after doing some research I got idea of using beetroot powder.

I did not have beetroot powder and I did not have time to search it in market. I thought of experimenting and decided to use beetroot juice.. After all I just needed its color. I could use some color from market, but I wanted this lip balm to be natural.

Beetroot always gives color to my hands when I boil it :), So beetroot was best choice. Thanks to Marie as she have mentioned in one of her post that beetroot is water soluble and  therefore she used glycerin to make lip gloss.

I also wanted nice fragrance, so I decided to give it strawberry flavor.. Girls love it.

Beetroot Strawberry Lip Balm

Then I started with my recipe:

  • 1 beetroot (Medium size)
  • 1 tablespoon beeswax
  • 2 teaspoon glycerin
  • 4.5 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 Vitamin E capsules
  • 1/2 teaspoon strawberry essence

Boil beetroot and remove it’s skin. Then grind it to make paste.

Beetroot paste

I then added water to paste and filtered it.

Then boiled this colored water to make it little more concentrated. I heated on low flame for 5-8 minutes.

Then in double boiler I added glycerin and 3 teaspoons of beetroot juice. And mixed it well.

Once it was mixed properly I added beeswax and olive oil

Heated in double boiler till wax melted properly. I was stirring it continuously.. But beetroot-glycerin mixture was still not getting mixed properly.

Then I turned off burner and whipped it using blender. And result was as expected.. Finally it was mixed properly forming a uniform fluid. (sigh)

I added essence and vitamin E oil by breaking capsules.

Again mixed using blender and poured it in lip balm containers. I kept then as it is to cool down and solidify.

This has aroma of strawberry and color of beetroot.

When I tried it, it gives pink tint on lips with this amazing aroma of strawberry.. 🙂

I would love to hear feedback from you..

Homemade Cocoa Lip Balm

Finally!!! after a week I got time to share one of my recipes. I believe 99.99% ladies love lip balm.. Let it be any season, girls need lip balm.

However the one we get in market mostly contains petroleum gel, which is not good for skin and it makes lips sticky and sometimes dark too.. After trying n number of balms I decided to make my own.

I found some recipes for lip balms without harmful chemicals. I wanted to make one with chocolate flavor. All lip balm recipes needed cocoa butter for making chocolate flavored lip balm (cocoa butter is not easily available in India as mentioned in my previous post ). But then I came across something called as “Oil Infusion”.

There are two ways of oil infusion:

  • Cold infusion (Requires at least one month of time)
  • Heat infusion (faster method)

I did not have patience to wait till one month so i decided to use second method. To make chocolate flavored infused oil, I heated olive oil with cocoa seeds on hot plate. It took 3-4 hours to get desired color and aroma.

Then I started with my actual recipe:

  1. Beeswax – 1 tablespoon
  2. Olive oil (heat infused with cocoa seeds) – 4 tablespoons
  3. Coconut oil – 1 tablespoon (It is in Liquid form in India)
  4. Vitamin E capsules – 2
  5. Butterscotch essence – 1 teaspoon
  • Melt beeswax using double boiler method. Don’t heat too much, just melt it
  • Add oils and stir well.

Mix oils and beeswax

  • Turn off burner or remove mixing bowl from boiler and add vitamin E and butterscotch essence. Stir well.
  • Immediately pour this mixture in the containers in which you want to store lip balm.

Cocoa lip balm with infused oil

  • Let it cool for some time.. Your lip balm is ready to use.. 🙂

This lip balm gives some shine to lips (almost negligible color) and it is nourishing and moisturizing. And the aroma of cocoa and butterscotch is just lovely..

Let me know how it goes with you..
